At this time of year when so many are enjoying commencement exercises as they graduate college and move to the next phase of their lives, here are a few thoughts about setting goals. First of all, let’s be clear about what goals are. Goals are targets that we are aiming for that have a high degree of importance to us. That means they are not something we wish to come true sometime in the future, but rather something we are determined to bring about. Here’s how you can tell whether you have a goal or merely a wish. The major distinction between the two, is the existence of a deadline date; a date upon which, or by which you intend to achieve that goal. One other major characteristic of a real goal is that we think about it every day. Life has so many distractions that will keep us from achievement of any kind, but having a goal requires that we focus on whatever that objective is with resolve and determination that we are going to achieve it, no matter what. Our attitude has got to be the one expressed by the incomparable motivator, Les Brown, in one of his powerful videos, “It’s not over until I win!“ Let me repeat that. “It’s not over until I win!“ When those six potent words become your theme, your determination will drive you to figure out how to go over, under, around or through any obstacle you meet on the way to your goal! There will be nothing that can stop you because you will refuse to be stopped! Your challenge is to figure out enough reasons why you must reach your goal. Then and only then will you build the mental toughness to overcome the stumbling blocks, you will surely face as you drive toward your personal goals. I hope you won’t waste your time looking for an easy path to a worthwhile goal. The easiest path is to make plans and then follow through with them. Nothing can beat a good plan, well executed! Now you know
