There’s an old saying that talk is cheap. I tend to disagree with that saying. I think there’s a high cost for talking; that it is not cheap. Even when taken at its usual meaning, that anybody can just talk, I still say, rather than cheap, talk can be very costly. What am I getting at? Psychologists have long believed that what we say, in particular to ourselves, has a high determinative effect on our self-esteem system. In one of my past muses, I talked about how powerful are words we say to our children, whether negative or positive. Likewise, words we speak to ourselves have at least the same potency. With that concept as a backdrop, the things we say to others about what we are going to do and when we are going to do them, if accomplished become strong builders of our self-esteem. On the contrary, promises to others, or to ourselves, that are not fulfilled put a negative drag on our attempts to bolster our own self-esteem. Whether we like it or not, we need to watch our mouths. We need to monitor what we say, to whom we say it and with what intensity we speak. Talk, far from being benign is powerful and potentially life-changing. Armed with this knowledge, we are now in a position to profoundly impact our lives and the lives of others we hold dear. Now that we know that talk is not cheap, but is rather highly valuable and super powerful, let’s begin to wield our words as forces for good, forces for encouragement and enlightenment. Let’s begin to speak positive life into our children, into our relationships and
soul-mending power into ourselves. Talk is not cheap. It’s powerful!
